Finding a therapist who takes Cigna in Suffolk County

By Barbara Counihan, LCSW · May 10, 2026 · 5 min read

Cigna is widely accepted in major metros but the in-network roster for outpatient mental health in Suffolk County is thinner than the directory makes it look. Many therapists in Cigna’s online directory are not actually taking new clients. Here’s how to navigate it.

Use the directory as a starting point, not the answer

Cigna’s “find a provider” tool lists everyone who has ever been credentialed with them, including therapists who closed their practices years ago. Treat it as a list of leads to call, not a confirmation of availability.

Call ahead

When you call, ask: “Are you in-network with Cigna and accepting new clients?” If the answer is yes, ask for a free 15-minute consult.

If the in-network roster is full

Two options. First, ask your Cigna plan if they have an out-of-network benefit. Many do — you pay out of pocket and submit for partial reimbursement. Second, ask the practice if they have any sliding-scale availability.
