How to use Aetna insurance for therapy on Long Island

By Barbara Counihan, LCSW · May 20, 2026 · 6 min read

If you have Aetna and you’re looking for a therapist on Long Island, you have more options than you might think. Aetna is one of the most widely accepted plans in New York. The hard part isn’t coverage. The hard part is figuring out what you’ll actually pay.

Step 1: Find your plan name

Aetna isn’t one plan — it’s dozens. Look at your insurance card. You want the plan name (something like “Aetna Open Choice PPO” or “Aetna HMO”) and your member ID.

Step 2: Call the number on the back

The behavioral-health phone number is usually on the back of the card, often separate from medical. Ask three questions:

  • What is my copay for outpatient mental-health therapy?
  • Do I have a deductible I need to meet first?
  • Do I need a referral?

Step 3: Let us do it for you

If you’d rather not make the call, send us your card info via our contact form. We verify Aetna benefits in 24 hours and email you the answers in writing.

At the session

You’ll pay your copay at the time of service. We bill Aetna for the remainder. That’s it. No surprise statements weeks later.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

Does Aetna cover therapy in New York?
Yes. Most Aetna commercial plans in New York cover outpatient mental-health therapy, often with a copay between $20 and $50 per session depending on your specific plan.
Do I need a referral?
Most Aetna plans do not require a referral for outpatient therapy. Some HMO plans do — check the back of your card or ask the practice when you call.
What if my deductible isn't met yet?
Some Aetna plans require you to meet a deductible before therapy coverage kicks in. Ask Happy Pro to verify your benefits — we'll find out exactly what you'll pay before your first session.
