Grief Therapy in Brookhaven, NY

By Happy Pro, Counseling Team · May 30, 2026 · 2 min read

Grief is not a problem to solve. It is a relationship that has changed shape. The work of grief therapy is not to make it small; it is to help you carry it without losing yourself.

Brookhaven is the largest town in Suffolk County by area, with hamlets that read very differently from one another. We see people across that mix who have lost a partner, a parent, a child, or a friend; people whose grief has gotten complicated because the loss was sudden, ambiguous, or layered with other things. None of that means anything is wrong with you. It means the work is real.

How grief therapy works here

The most evidence-based approaches for grief are complicated grief therapy (a structured approach for grief that has gotten stuck), narrative therapy (working with the story of the loss), and meaning-centered approaches (focused on what the loss has changed about how you understand your life). Most people see meaningful change inside twelve to twenty sessions; longer is fine when needed.

What it costs

Brookhaven households use a wide range of insurance: commercial PPOs through Long Island and NYC employers, public-sector and union plans, and a substantial share of National Lab and research-related coverage. We are in network with the major plans and verify your specific benefits in writing before your first session. With most in-network plans (Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Oxford, Northwell Direct), the typical out of pocket cost is between $0 and $40 per session, depending on your specific plan. Coverage may vary; we check your specific benefits in writing before your first session at no cost. Send your insurance information here.

If we are not in network with your plan, you may still have out of network benefits that reimburse a portion. The payment options page walks through the Mentaya tool to check that quickly. Self-pay rates are listed there too.

Same-week openings, most weeks

We hold intake capacity so most weeks we can get you in within days, not months. Sessions are in person at our Long Island office or by secure video anywhere in New York State.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

Is grief therapy the same as bereavement counseling?
There is overlap. Bereavement counseling is often short-term and offered through hospice or community programs. Grief therapy is longer-term outpatient work, especially helpful when grief feels stuck.
How long should I wait after a loss to start therapy?
There is no right amount of time. People reach out at one week and at twenty years and both are appropriate. If you are wondering, that is usually answer enough.
