Trauma & EMDR

Trauma Therapy in Port Jefferson, NY

By Happy Pro, Counseling Team · May 30, 2026 · 2 min read

A lot of the trauma work we do in Port Jefferson is for the things people carry without naming. For long-shift healthcare staff at Mather and St. Charles, for university families, for first responders. Treatable, almost every time.

Port Jefferson Village sits next to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and St. Charles Hospital, with Stony Brook University a short drive west. We see clinicians, nurses, and support staff who have not paused since the pandemic and are starting to feel the cost. We also see survivors of single events who have been told they should just be over it by now. None of that is true.

How trauma therapy works here

The best-studied outpatient trauma therapies are EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE). All three are evidence-based and trauma-focused. Our Clinical Director is EMDR-trained. Most people see meaningful change inside twelve to twenty sessions.

What it costs

Port Jefferson households use a heavier-than-average share of healthcare-system plans (Northwell Direct, Mather, Stony Brook) plus commercial PPOs through Long Island employers and the university. We are in network with the major plans and verify your specific benefits in writing before the first session. With most in-network plans (Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Oxford, Northwell Direct), the typical out of pocket cost is between $0 and $40 per session, depending on your specific plan. Coverage may vary; we check your specific benefits in writing before your first session at no cost. Send your insurance information here.

If we are not in network with your plan, you may still have out of network benefits that reimburse a portion. The payment options page walks through the Mentaya tool to check that quickly. Self-pay rates are listed there too.

Same-week openings, most weeks

We hold intake capacity so most weeks we can get you in within days, not months. Sessions are in person at our Long Island office or by secure video anywhere in New York State.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

Do I have to talk about everything that happened?
No. Trauma therapies are designed so you do not have to relive the worst moments verbally. EMDR in particular keeps the talking minimal.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Most people see meaningful change inside twelve to twenty sessions. Complex or layered trauma can run longer; we revisit the plan together as we go.
